First theorized in 1988’s Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, authored by Edward Herman and American political activist Noam Chomsky, the role of mass media is advertised through five distinct filters, each highlighting mainstream journalism and it’s role in the mechanics of power. Broken down through ownership, advertising, the media elite, flak and the common enemy, Al Jazeera’s english leg has taken these thoughts and brought them to life with a beautifully produced short, hauntingly animated by Pierangelo Pirak and narrated by Amy Goodman, founder of Democracy Now!
Even if politics isn’t your cup of tea, its a great educational piece that provides insight into the structure of how the masses are fed news and the inner workings of these major corporations.
